What’s this story about? THOREAU’S CABIN is the story of Henry David Thoreau’s coming of age as a writer, citizen, naturalist, teacher and human being. It begins with his graduation from Harvard, his coming home in search of solitude and time to read and write and finding, instead, pressure from all sides to help with the family business, to make money, to find love, to explore the world and to end slavery, among other things. until he writes his classics, Walden and “Civil Disobedience,”
Why this story, being told this way, and why now? Thoreau was one of our greatest writers and thinkers, a philosopher who influenced Gandhi, King and Tolstoy. Americans, in particular, need to know about who he was and about what he has given to us as a writer, moralist, observer of nature, concerned citizen and seeker. I seek to humanize him and to give a glimpse into his relationships with his family, with RW Emerson, Louisa May Alcott and others. I also seek to educate, entertain and inspire my audience.
This story needs to be told as a musical so as to reflect the vitality of his life, his challenges, his ideas and those of his contemporaries.
About the Author Discovering Thoreau’s Walden in high school and his thoughts on simplicity was a life-changing event for me. Since then, there has been hardly a day where I have not thought about something Thoreau wrote. I have written and performed a one-act play about a kid discovering Thoreau and have worked on two related screenplays. I have read a number of his essays as well as numerous biographies and accounts of him and his contemporaries. I am a member of the Thoreau Society and of the Dramatists Guild of America and have an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College.
